FWBO Day

2007 is a significant anniversary year in the history of the FWBO. Founded in 1967 it marks the 40th anniversary of the Friends of the Western Buddhist Order itself. It also marks the 50th anniversary of the Survey of Buddhism, possibly Sangharakshita's most important literary contribution to an understanding of Buddhism in both "its full breadth and ultimate depth". Ten years earlier, in 1947, Sangharakshita, then calling himself Dharmapriya, along with his friend, Buddhapriya, burnt their identity papers, dyed their robes, and with begging bowl in hand and the spirit of devotion and adventure in their hearts, left behind the household life to wander freely as did the disciples of the Buddha 2,500 years ago.

One year, three important anniversaries. When Saraha became aware of these he expressed a desire to hold a celebration in Birmingham in view of the fact that a national FWBO Day wouldn't be taking place. After Bhante agreed to give a talk a date was set and the organisation could begin. On Saturday 7th April about 300 people came to Birmingham from as far north as Inverness and as far south as Brighton. The event began with a talk by Bhante entitled 'Looking back - and forward', followed by a break and then sevenfold puja led by Dharmamati. The West Midlands sangha rose to the challenge with great zeal and hospitality, leaving those who had made the journey, long or short, with a very positive impression of what we are building in the West Midlands. Bhante spoke for one hour without notes (!) to an audience, many of whom had never see him give a talk before.
